City of Beloit seeking quality over quantity with new fire inspection ordinance

The City of Beloit is looking to change the frequency of their fire inspections.
Director of Strategic Communications Sarah Millard says they currently require inspections twice a year but don’t have the time or staff to verify compliance.
The current system involves an “honor system” that allows property owners to mail in letters verifying that violations have been corrected.
Millard says the city council is looking at a new ordinance to only require one yearly inspection, which would allow fire inspectors to make more follow up inspections with violators.
The city believes this system would help prevent hazardous conditions from getting out of control.
The Beloit City Council will have a first reading of the ordinance change during their meeting Monday night.
