Officials: Propane tank leak in Milton led to 10-hour evacuation of homes, businesses

| By Big Radio News Staff |
Authorities say nobody got hurt, but a gas leak at a propane terminal in Milton left three residents and three businesses evacuated for 10 hours.
Lakeside Fire-Rescue says fire and emergency crews showed up about 5:30 a.m. Monday to Milton Propane to find a leaking, 60,000-gallon propane tank with its lower valve blown out.
Officials shut down adjacent roads around the propane terminal at 3992 Vincent Street, which is just off John Paul Road.
The fire department says multiple agencies helped Milton Propane as people on scene tried to figure out how to offload the massive store of propane from the leaking tank.
It was a complex operation that involved siphoning the propane into a separate tank truck. That took more than two hours because the blown tank was leaking subzero-temperature propane, causing a spray that immediately froze.
Rock County and Madison Hazmat teams were among more than a dozen public safety agencies assisting in the response.
