Fire authorities say a large building at an auto salvage near Edgerton is destroyed after a vehicle caught fire Wednesday morning.

Lakeside Fire District Battalion Chief Chris Lukas says fire officials are working to learn more about the circumstances of the fire at Morrison’s Auto Parts.

He says a few firefighters had minor injuries fighting the blaze reported at around 6 a.m. Wednesday at the large auto salvage at 6307 West Highway 59. That’s about a mile west of Edgerton.

One firefighter got burns Lukas calls minor after an explosion that happened as crews were fighting the fire. Two other firefighters had signs of heat exhaustion. Lukas says the firefighters affected were treated and are expected to be OK.

Two returned to duty today.

Lukas says local social media rumors posted Wednesday that say at least one firefighter had to be transported from Morrison’s by helicopter with injuries are false.

Lukas says crews had to pull apart the building to fight the fire because it had collapsed in the inferno. The building was destroyed. But other nearby buildings at the salvage yard were mostly undamaged.

It’s not clear what started the fire, but Lukas says a worker at Morrison’s noticed a vehicle on fire in a building where vehicles are disassembled. He says by the time they worker hauled the vehicle out, the building and contents in it had caught fire.

An owner at Morrison’s Auto declined to comment, but the company gave a written statement they were up and running, and they were glad there were no serious injuries.
