Beloit College lecture focuses on Afghanistan and US government

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Roy Gutman brings his research in Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Beloit College campus Monday.

He says the end of the ten year war between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan in 1989 created a regional power vacuum. Shortly after the collapse of the USSR, the United States and other international organizations didn't exert political influence in Southwest Asia. By the mid-1990s, the Taliban had seized control in Afghanistan and provided refuge to Osama bin Laden.

Gutman discusses the role of government and media in the situation.
