Beloit paramedics get some new tools

WCLO's Steve Benton reports on some new testing equipment for Beloit paramedics

BELOIT — Beloit Fire Department paramedics are now equipped with Masimo Rad-57s, a device that measures the level of carbon monoxide in a body.

Deputy Chief, Bryan Northrup, says the tools cost about $4,000 each and the department used money collected in the "paramedics fund" to purchase several. He says they have enough of the devices to equip all rigs used by paramedics.

Northrup says knowing whether a patient has been exposed to carbon monoxide can help keep down costs. Without the device, a patient suspected of carbon monoxide exposure would be sent to an emergency room, by ambulance. The ride can cost around $700 and the cost of being seen in an emergency room starts at around $1,000.
