WCLO's Steve Benton reports the "speed trailer" used by the Rock County Sheriff's Office, needs repairs after being hit by a drunk motorist

— A recent accident emphasizes the need for another enforcement effort in Rock County.

Rock County Sheriff's Office Captain, Jude Maurer, says an intoxicated driver hit the department's "speed trailer" recently, putting it out of commission.

Maurer says the trailer has been hit before, but they've never been able to catch the offending driver. This time, according to Maurer, the driver was arrested for OWI, 3rd offense, and other traffic violations.

Maurer says the county received a state grant recently and will deploy an additional eight patrols this weekend to crack down on intoxicated and impaired drivers.

Maurer says the trailer is serviceable and will need repairs but won't need to be replaced, this time.

I hope I'm on the Jury when this goes to court. I think a good Lawyer will get him off because I'm sure that speed sign could be considered an attractive nuisance!

Justaguy, where are the "high" drivers you mention? High on what?

The intoxicated driver will likely charge that the flashing speed sign distracted him, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. He will then settle out of court and be awarded a few hundred thousand dollars - now that's our court system at work.

I believe the Department gets a certain dollar amount in grant money to do these "extra details." They have to make the money last throughout the entire summer, so I'd assume that is why they do these extra patrols on certain weekends or every other weekend.

Let me see if I have this right ... the speed trailer was hit and damaged so this prompts them to come up with more enforcments? it's not the innocent people getting killed by these drunk/high drivers? ... something is kinda wrong with that, JMO

I think there going add another patrol car to there night shift! Janeville PD usually adds more patrol in the Summer Months. Due to the hot weather, more parties, cookouts, graduations etc... Must be "Miller Time"
