Odyssey Con was great!

By Steve Benton ( Contact )   April 27, 2009

Call me a geek if you want, but the weekend sci fi conference in Madison, was much more than a gathering of geeks. Odyssey Con (called OdCon by regulars) brought together writers, game designers, scholars, artists and more, but mostly a lot of people with a love for all forms of science fiction. That includes movies, tv shows, books, comics, art, and yes... even role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. The two panel discussions I enjoyed the most were on Edgar Allen Poe and how to design games from existing intellectual properties (books movies etc.) and the opposite, basing a book, movie, or tv show on an existing game. The second, had four panel members. One was Matt Forbeck, son of Rock County Judge Kenneth Forbeck and Helen Forbeck, Beloit office manager for Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin. Matt is a very successful writer, and added a great deal to the panel. Matt and I had a chance meeting (which I reminded him about) back in the mid 1980's at Beloit College. We were attending an RPG (role playing game) conference and ended up on the same Dungeons and Dragons team. We came in first place.
