Your severe weather information source

By Tim Bremel ( Contact )   April 17, 2008

Where can you turn when the weather turns on you? We HOPE its 1230-AM. At WCLO, we continually adapt our severe weather coverage plans to keep up with changes in programming, staffing and technology.

As Severe Weather Awareness Week (April 21-25) in Wisconsin approaches, here is what you can expect from WCLO when it comes to severe weather.

Of course, when we're live, our news hosts and meteorologists from WISC-TV will update you on any severe weather watches or warnings as conditions warrant.

What makes WCLO SO DIFFERENT in our coverage approach is what happens when we are not "live". We have staff on call 24/7 to deal with severe weather to keep you informed.

If a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado WATCH is issued, you will hear a series of periodic 'beeps' or tones mixed into our programming. This is your alert that severe weather is possible. In this mode, you will hear an announcement of the impending weather conditions within 10 minutes for as long as the WATCH is in effect.

If A Severe Thunderstorm WARNING is issued for Rock County, we will break into sports or syndicated programming as conditions warrant to keep you informed.

If a Tornado WARNING is issued for Rock County, we will break from programming until and give you updates until the "all clear" is issued.

We know its not a perfect system, and some folks will question our break-ins or weather watch tone notification system. But we prefer to err on the side of safety. We've all heard stories of communities being devastated by storms. It only takes one, and WCLO is committed to ensuring the safety of our listeners the best we possibly can.

A great resource page for information on storms and storm safety can be found on the National Weather Service Website.

during the day, your severe weather coverage; especially during a warning, is excellent. But in the middle of the night---Ive not had much luck with WCLO.

Thanks for the great info and keeping us upto date. It's nice to know their are "LOCAL" stations u can tune to to provide accurate information> I think the relationship that WCLO/WJVL has with WISC TV 3 is awesome what awondeful job is does for everyone. My only suggestions is for listeners is to get an NOAA weather Radio.
