Did someone give their life for you?

By Tim Bremel ( Contact )   May 22, 2008

On this Memorial Day weekend, I find myself making plans, preparing to enjoy an extra day away with family and friends, celebrating the arrival of summer with a cookout and heading out to Airfest.

But then, Wednesday evening at Parkview High School’s awards night, a young Mr. Peterson was recognized for choosing to enter to the Army after graduation. Today, I’m asking myself a convicting question. Would I have the courage to voluntarily give up my life in order to do those things I’m planning this weekend? I honestly don’t know.

What a bold choice this young man made - with his entire life ahead of him, his choice was to protect and defend our way of life. How humble I felt as I realized that this young man’s future may very well improve the quality of my remaining years.

So this Memorial Day Weekend, I hope we all take the time to attend one of the many services, tributes and events that take place. Our service men and women rarely ask anything of us for their selfless dedication to serve and protect us and our country.

So let me ask then, on behalf of all of us who benefit from their service, that we do the one thing that every one of us is capable of:

Give those among us our thanks and appreciation, and those who have passed on - our honor and remembrance.

Have a blessed Memorial Day weekend, and may God protect our service men and women.

My father and 4 of his brothers served in WWII and William the oldest brother lost his life. The surviving 4 were Rolland, Patrick, Charles and Harold They all have since passed but they live on in my heart and my right to freedom every single day.

Keep an eye on the news. Alpha Company will be deploying in early 2009. It'll be my 2nd tour, but a 1st tour for most of these kids. Company A has some of the finest young Soldiers, dedicated to defending freedom. We are Janesvilles and Wisconsins "ARMY", and Proud of it!

I have been waiting for someone to comment on this and I have come to a conclusion. Tim you said it all. Many thanks from my family to all the men and women that have and are serving our country. It is because of them that we have the freedom to do the things we do today.
